Details
Black or White (2014) is a heartfelt drama that delves into the complexities of family, race, and identity. The story revolves around Elliot Anderson (played by Kevin Costner), a grieving widower who finds himself embroiled in a bitter custody battle over his granddaughter, Eloise.
After the sudden death of his wife, Elliot has been raising Eloise on his own. A biracial child, Eloise's mother died during childbirth, leaving Elliot devastated but determined to provide the best life possible for his granddaughter. However, when Eloise's maternal grandmother, Rowena (played by Octavia Spencer), learns of the child's mixed heritage, she initiates a custody battle, believing that Eloise would be better off with her side of the family.
The film explores the inherent biases and prejudices that exist within society, as Elliot and Rowena clash over what they believe is best for Eloise. As the case unfolds, both sides are forced to confront their own prejudices and challenge their preconceived notions about race and family.
Black or White offers a thought-provoking exploration of race in America, highlighting the complexities of identity and the deep-rooted societal divisions that still exist. With powerful performances from Costner and Spencer, the film tackles sensitive subjects with both sensitivity and authenticity. It ultimately poses the question: what truly defines a family?
