Gösta Eriksson, a hairdresser, buys a car from used-car dealer Bertil Planåker. But Gösta soon discovers that the car is a wreck. Planåker won't give him his money back, in fact he denies ever having seen Gösta. Gösta's brother Rolle is released from prison and promises to help him. They form an investment company, Parabola, and convinces Planåker to invest a lot of money in it. Planåker has a lot of shady business colleagues who also invest their money. Gösta's and Rolle's scam becomes much bigger than they had bargained for.

1939. During a blinding snowstorm, a young man in the Polish forest rescues a young unconscious woman who lost her way, he who takes her back to his farmhouse. It is love at first sight for both. He is Oskar Koenig, a Nazi officer assigned to an undercover unit, the men in the unit acting as Polish farmers to discover and turn in any Polish resistant fighters. She is Rachel, a Jew, the daughter of a rabbi, and fiancée to her childhood friend Bernard. She thought she loved Bernard until she experienced what she knows is true love for Oskar. Oskar is only fighting in the war to please his father, Nazi General Martin Koenig. In reality, Oskar, a poet with a romantic spirit to match, does not believe in war or fighting, and does not believe in what the Nazis, and thus by association what he and his father are doing. Due to circumstances of the war, Oskar and Rachel become separated, with their love for each other still in tact. Oskar's mother, Marlene Koenig, upon learning of a Jewish woman in Oskar's heart, encourages him to pursue her, she willing to provide the resources to do so, which, if Oskar accepts her offer, would place both their lives at risk. Even if Oskar and Rachel were ever to encounter each other again, their experiences and the circumstances of the war may affect if they can join together as a couple, the war which may place them on opposing sides of a kill or be killed scenario.

Set in German-occupied Norway, this is an embellished account of the remarkable efforts of the Norwegian resistance to sabotage the German development of the atomic bomb. Resistance fighter Knut Straud enlists the reluctant physicist Rolf Pedersen in an effort to destroy the German heavy water production plant near the village of Rjukan in rural Telemark. In the process, Pedersen discovers that his ex-wife Anna and her uncle have also joined the resistance. British commandos dispatched to destroy the plant are killed when their glider hits the mountainside at night. An improvised raid by the resistance ends in the partial destruction of the heavy water canisters, but the contingency plans of Reichskommissar Terboven enable the Germans to resume production quickly. Pedersen wants to recommend to London that the Allies bomb the plant. Straud opposes him because of the potential death toll on Norwegian civilians and a fight ensues. They send in separate recommendations, and the air raid takes place, but it fails to destroy the heavy water. A Norwegian traitor gives away the resistance hideout, and Anna's uncle is killed. The Germans load the canisters onto a ferry for shipment to Germany, and the resistance rig explosives to sink the ferry in the fjord. As the ferry is about to leave, it is boarded by the widow and baby of one of Pedersen's and Straud's colleagues. Pedersen boards the ferry and organizes a children's game of "lifejacket" in order to minimize civilian deaths. The film closes with resistance members rescuing passengers as the ferry sinks.
