Details
Hysteria (2011) is a charming historical comedy-drama that sheds light on the invention of the world's first vibrator. Set in Victorian-era London, this witty and thought-provoking film follows the story of Mortimer Granville, a young doctor struggling to find his place in the medical field.
As Granville joins a prestigious medical practice, he becomes increasingly frustrated with the ineffective treatments for women suffering from hysteria, a catch-all diagnosis for various emotional and physical symptoms. However, he discovers a revolutionary solution: manual stimulation of the genitalia. Recognizing the potential but acknowledging the taboo nature of this treatment, Granville sets out to create a device that can ease women's symptoms without the need for constant doctor visits.
With the help of his wealthy and forward-thinking friend, Edmund St. John Smythe, Granville develops the prototype of what we now know as the vibrator. This groundbreaking invention quickly becomes popular, and Granville finds himself at the center of a sexual revolution. However, he also faces backlash from traditionalists and must navigate the complexities of love, relationships, and societal expectations.
Hysteria blends humor, romance, and social commentary to explore themes of gender, sexuality, and the repression of female pleasure in the 19th century. With a stellar ensemble cast, including Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy, this delightful and cheeky film offers a lighthearted yet thought-provoking look at a fascinating chapter in medical history.
